A blend of Jonathan and Golden Delicious apples, the New York native Jonagold apple offers a unique honey-tart flavor and crispy, juicy, nearly yellow flesh. It debuted in 1968, a product of the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station. With a yellow-green base skin color and a red-orange blush, it is excellent both for eating fresh and for cooking. Jonagold is typically available October through July.
This variety comes from crossing the Jonathan and the Golden Delicious apple varieties. The Jonagold is a large, red-over- yellow fruit that has an outstanding balance of flavor. It is a firm apple with a crisp, unique, tangy-sweet flavor. The Jonagold is excellent for both eating fresh and for cooking.
